Business Insurance +5%; Personal Insurance -7%
What Went Right
  • Business Insurance posted 5% written premium growth with an underlying combined ratio of 89.3; Small Business grew 7% at 86.5.
  • Net investment income rose 22% YoY to $800M, helped by higher limited partnership returns and invested assets.
  • Personal Insurance underlying combined ratio improved 1.7 points to 86.3, with home results strong and auto pricing above loss trend.
What to Watch
  • General liability prior-year reserves increased $46M in Q2 ($116M for 1H26) on elevated large-loss frequency in excess/umbrella across multiple accident years.
  • Commercial auto prior-year reserves increased $26M in 1H26 due to adverse development in 2023-2024, driven by higher severity and attorney involvement.
  • Personal Lines written premium declined 7% (auto -10%) as direct-channel competition remained elevated; Employee Benefits disability loss ratio rose 6.3 points to 74.8%.
Management Guidance
  • No formal quarterly revenue guidance given; full-year 2026 net investment income is expected to increase with overall portfolio yields broadly in line with 2025.
  • Limited partnership returns in 2H26 are expected to remain broadly consistent with the 1H26 average annualized return.
  • Quarterly share repurchases are expected to increase to $475M through the remainder of 2026.
  • Business Insurance and Employee Benefits remain on track for 2027 expense targets; Personal Insurance expense target faces increasing pressure.
Investor Lens
The thesis is stronger after this call: core ROE remains at 18.7%, commercial pricing is disciplined at 5.8%, and the new $4.2B buyback boosts capital return visibility. Reserve increases in general liability and commercial auto are modest relative to reserve bases and reflect a prudent response to rising attorney involvement and severity. The main drag continues to be Personal Lines direct, where growth is negative despite underlying margin improvement. Overall, earnings quality looks solid and the stock's shareholder return narrative is compelling.
