📊 MIXED Q1 2026: $211.5M pre-tax operating income, 96.6% combined ratio.
Revenue & Profitability
Net operating income was $171 million ($0.68 per share) compared to $202 million ($0.81 per share) in Q1 2025. Net investment income increased 4% due to a larger investment base and higher yields. Book value per share was $24.53, up 2.6% including dividends. The company repurchased $161 million of shares during the quarter.
Outlook
Management expects net investment income growth to remain low-to-mid single digits for 2026. In Title, the start of the homebuying season showed higher inventory, lower interest rates, and moderating price growth, though rates spiked late in the quarter due to inflation concerns. Specialty fundamentals remain strong despite top-line and expense pressure.
Growth Drivers
Key growth levers include new specialty operating companies (e.g., Old Republic Property), technology modernization, and data/analytics investments. In Title, strong commercial activity—particularly in data centers and energy facilities—drives growth. The ECM acquisition, expected to close around July 1, will contribute to top and bottom lines in H2 2026.
Balance Sheet & CapEx
The company is investing in new specialty operating companies, core system modernization (about half of 20 specialty companies), data analytics, and AI. Expenses related to these investments are currently expensed, but will be capitalized once systems reach production, then amortized over approximately 10 years. The formation of Old Republic Property and Lodestar Claims are part of these investments.
Margins
Specialty's combined ratio was 94.8% (vs. 89.8% in Q1 2025), with the expense ratio rising to 31.2% due to investments. Title's combined ratio improved to 100% (vs. 102%) as revenues increased. Management expects the specialty expense ratio to settle at or below Q1 levels if premium growth continues at 3%-5%, but improvement will take time as systems mature.
Key Risks
Key risks flagged include Legal System Abuse driving severity trends in commercial auto, competitive pressures reducing retention ratios, and expense strain from technology and startup investments. In Title, interest rate spikes due to inflation concerns could dampen residential market recovery. The trucking industry's margin pressures also challenge top-line growth in commercial auto.

Financial Model
Projections are built from each company's audited annual financials (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) over the last 5 fiscal years. Forward assumptions — revenue growth %, EBITDA margin, D&A (USD millions), interest expense, tax rate, and capex — are AI-generated using historical context and refreshed twice a year: after the December results season and after the September/Q4 results season.

DCF Valuation
Fair Value = Σ(FCFt / (1+WACC)t) + Terminal Value. Terminal Value uses the Gordon Growth Model: FCF5 × (1+g) / (WACC−g). Default WACC: 10% (US risk-free ~4.5%, equity risk premium ~5.5%). Default terminal growth: 3% (long-run US nominal GDP proxy).

CAGR Tracker
Expected 5-year CAGR = (DCF Fair Value / Current Price)1/5 − 1. Assumes fair value is reached in exactly 5 years — a mechanical estimate only.
