📊 MIXED SouthState Q1 2026: ROA 1.37%, ROTCE 17.6%, loan growth 7.5%, pipelines up 33%.
Revenue & Profitability
Q1 2026 net interest income was $562 million, down $19 million from Q4 due to day count. Non-interest income was $100 million, at the high end of guidance. Net charge-offs were $10 million (9 basis points annualized). Loan growth was $896 million (7.5% annualized). The net interest margin was 3.79%, slightly below the 3.80-3.90% guidance. The company repurchased 1.5 million shares at an average price of $100.84, with CET1 at 11.3% and tangible book value per share of $56.90 (up 14% YoY).
Outlook
Management noted a yield curve environment more favorable to balance sheet growth, with consolidation disruption in their markets creating hiring opportunities. They see a decent chance of achieving the higher end of mid-to-upper single-digit loan growth for 2026. Deposit competition is expected to remain elevated given the rate environment, but they anticipate ease when a rate-cutting cycle resumes.
Growth Drivers
Key growth levers include expanding the commercial banking sales force by 10-15% over the next couple of years, with a 7% team increase since October 1. Texas and Colorado markets drove strong growth: loan production doubled year-over-year from $500 million to $1.1 billion, with Houston being the top growth market. Loan pipelines grew 33% from year-end to $6.4 billion, two-thirds of which came from Florida, Texas, and Colorado.
Balance Sheet & CapEx
The company is investing in artificial intelligence by deploying Copilot licenses and using AI tools from existing major software providers. Incremental costs are relatively small, and the focus is on reengineering processes for speed and scalability. On investment securities, the portfolio is not expected to expand significantly; about $900 million matures through end of 2026, which can be reinvested at roughly 100 basis points higher yield.
Margins
Net interest margin was 3.79% in Q1 2026, slightly below guidance due to higher deposit costs. Full-year NIM is now expected in the 375-380 range, with lower NII dollars in 2026 but catch-up in 2027 from higher growth. Non-interest income to average assets remains guided at 55-60 basis points (Q1 hit 61 bps). NIE guidance is unchanged at roughly 4% growth for the year.
Key Risks
Risks flagged include elevated deposit competition and a volatile yield curve, which could pressure funding costs. Management also mentioned potential credit weakness in lower-income consumers and floating-rate SBA small business loans due to the 5% rate shock, though losses are mitigated by low loan-to-values and government guarantees. The company's share price is seen as disconnected from fundamental performance, leading to active buybacks.

Financial Model
Projections are built from each company's audited annual financials (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) over the last 5 fiscal years. Forward assumptions — revenue growth %, EBITDA margin, D&A (USD millions), interest expense, tax rate, and capex — are AI-generated using historical context and refreshed twice a year: after the December results season and after the September/Q4 results season.

DCF Valuation
